Free Brush Collection Every Wednesday

The FREE curbside brush pickup program will continue in the City of Milford throughout 2013. Brush is hereby defined as trimmings from bushes or shrubs, as well as tree branches from trimming and/or pruning trees.  The brush pickup is scheduled for every Wednesday during the months of April through October in 2013.

The volume of curbside brush collection has continued to increase over the past few years and the City acknowledges that brush collection is beneficial service for our residents.  Due to the brush increase we are trying to streamline the system in order to increase our efficiency and improve service. The City requests your cooperation to observe the following guidelines for brush pickup:

  • During the months of November through March brush pickup will be strictly Call-In Requests Only.
  • All brush must be at the curb no later than 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
  • Tree limbs and branches cannot be over 6 inches in diameter and no longer than 8 feet. This will be enforced.
  • Limbs at the curb are to be place with the cut section facing the street.
  • Do not block fire hydrants, sidewalks or storm drains or access to the brush pile with vehicles or other objects.
  • Small twigs and sticks are to be put into bundles and secured with twine. The Service Department will not be able to accept loose sticks, twigs, or piles of debris.
  • Yard waste (i.e., pine needles, grass clippings or leaves) will not be accepted, nor will materials contained in plastic garbage bags.

If your brush materials do not meet the following guidelines it may be “tagged” and the problem will be indicated on the postcard.  If you make the proper corrections your brush will be picked up the following pickup.

The following items will not be accepted with brush:  logs, root balls, stumps, grass clippings, pine needles, plants, leaves, lumber or anything in plastic bags or other such containers.  Please review the suggestions below for proper disposal.

Fence posts, railroad ties, wood pallets:
Cut into 4 foot lengths or less; dispose of with residential garbage pickup; each piece must not exceed 75 lbs in weight.

Leaves:
Bag and dispose in residential garbage pickup, or participate in City’s leaf pickup program in the fall.

Brush with clumps of roots, thorns:
Brush may be mixed with garbage loose in garbage container and dispose of through residential garbage pickup.

Brush from private contracting work:
Contractor to dispose of material without benefit from this program.

Yard waste: Yard waste such as pine needles, grass clippings, and leaves may be comingled in your curbside residential garbage.

This brush pickup program is for the sole use of the residents of incorporated City of Milford. Privately hired contractors (landscapers, tree trimmers) must dispose of brush without the benefit of this program. Tree removal is not considered to be trimming or pruning. The City will not remove this debris which is the responsibility homeowner/contractor for proper disposal.

We certainly appreciate your help in making the system work.

If you have any questions concerning brush pickup, contact the Service Department at 513-831-7018.

Energy Choice Ohio

The Milford City Council recently discussed the process for electric and gas aggregation. In some other communities in Ohio, residents have voted-in aggregation so that residents realized some savings on their monthly gas and electric bills. Aggregation is when a group of residents officially form together to increase their buying power. The City is interested in receiving feedback from our residents to determine if Milford should initiate the steps for gas and electric aggregation. We would like to know if our residents think that this is worth pursuing. Please direct your questions, concerns or comments to City Manager Jeff Wright at jwright@milfordohio.org or at 831-4192.

Additional information for aggregation can be obtained by visiting the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio website at http://www.puco.ohio.gov/puco/?LinkServID=07FE3FC8-D9A0-EC8A-F3CC5EFBF5A8EE32.

Stack of Money

2013 Business Incentive Rebate Program

The City realizes that by incentivizing owners of commercial properties or the owners of small businesses to make improvements to their buildings, Milford will be a more competitive location for existing small  businesses to stay and the City will be a place that additional businesses will be attracted to.

The City recognizes the value of actively working with property owners and businesses to reinvigorate different areas of the City by assisting business owners with façade improvements and the correction of code violations. The improvements lead to revitalized commercial areas, elimination of blight and enhanced livability of surrounding neighborhoods.

The City will be offering grants of 50% of a capital improvement project’s costs, up to $5,000.  Commercial properties in historic, downtown Milford and the business corridors of Lila Avenue and Main Streets will be eligible.

With very few undeveloped, commercial properties and even fewer opportunities to expand our boundaries, staff and City Council agree that it is critical to reinvigorate   existing commercial properties.  With that in mind, the City is exploring a few ways in which we can encourage the redevelopment or rehabilitation of underutilized, or underperforming sites.

A limited amount of funding will be available each year.  For additional details about eligible projects or to obtain an application, please call City Hall at (513) 831-4192.

Shop With A Cop

The Milford Police and Fire Departments worked together on an event Thursday, December 13th at the Target Store located on Rivers Edge Drive. The two departments are accustomed to working together but this scene was not the typical emergency scenario.

Twenty-two emergency service workers donated their time to spread the holiday spirit as part of the Shop with a Hero program. Shop with a Hero is a program that gives needy children an opportunity to feel the joy of shopping for Christmas gifts – to give and receive. With the money that is raised for this program, children receive gift cards to buy presents for their siblings, parents, or themselves.

Target partnered with the Police and Fire Departments to help create an atmosphere filled with holiday shopping and fun. They donated some of the gift cards, scheduled extra staff to work and provided gift bags and snacks. Other donors include, Tri-County Mall, Toomey Natural Foods, Ruby Tuesday, and Karen and Brian Wikoff. Although the children were the focus of the program, the benefits were mutual. The police and fire employees felt blessed to be able to witness the children shopping for their siblings and parents instead of only thinking of themselves.

Beetle Busters - Website Resource for Asian Longhorned Beetle

The Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) has caused tens of thousands of hardwood trees to be destroyed in several states. Most recently, the ALB has been found in Clermont County, Ohio. Trees in forests and cities are at risk. Property owners are encouraged to learn more about the ALB by visiting the Beetle Busters website.

If you think you’ve found an Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) or signs of infestation, always record the area where the specimen was found. If possible, capture the insects you think are ALB, place them in a jar and freeze them — this will preserve the insect for easy identification. Take digital pictures of the insect and damage to your trees in case officials request them.  Call the Ohio Department of Agriculture at (855) 252-6450 to report your findings or click here to fill out a report.

Riverside Park Ball Field

Riverside Park Ball Field

In 2011, Milford Youth Baseball Association and the City of Milford collaborated to restore the Riverside Park ball field for the 2012 season. This collaboration would include upgrading several items before the first game of the season. Over the last several months, the Service Department has been restoring the ball field lights, restrooms, concession stand, water fountain, waste containers, parking and infield. These improvements have enhanced the ball field and will provide a unique experience for games played at night under the lights in our community.

The City of Milford celebrated the restoration of Riverside Park ball field with a ribbon cutting on May 5  at 100 Riverside Drive in Milford.

-

For additional information about reserving the ball field, please call the Municipal Building at 513-831-4192.

Memorial Park Fountain ribbon cutting

Memorial Park Fountain

In 2011, the Service Department completed some much needed landscaping improvements to open up the picturesque view to the Little Miami Scenic River from Memorial Park. One of the top priorities for 2012 from the Milford’s Parks and Recreation Commission was a decorative fountain for Memorial Park.

The City of Milford is excited about the new 59” tall Obelisk fountain at Memorial Park. The natural color fountain is another aesthetic amenity that has been added to Memorial Park located at 401 Main Street in Milford.

The public is encouraged to visit Memorial Park during their next dining or shopping trip in historic downtown Milford.
