Tornado Safety

Although there is little you can do to protect your home and workplace from the destructive nature of a tornadoıs path, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Be Knowledgeable

  • Peak months for tornado activity in Ohio are April, May, June, and July;
  • A tornado watch is issued when weather conditions are favorable for the formation of tornados. During a tornado watch, keep an eye on the weather and be prepared to take shelter if needed;
  • A tornado warning is issued when a tornado is sighted and confirmed or indicated by radar. You should take shelter immediately;
  • Because of the violent and erratic nature of tornados, there may not be time for a warning. Thatıs why it is important to stay alert during severe weather conditions.

Be Aware of Basic Safety Rules

  • Keep alert to changing weatherconditions;
  • Know where your shelter is before you need it;
  • Take shelter immediately when you hear a tornado warning or see a funnel cloud;
  • Turn to t.v. and radio for local emergency information.

Create a Disaster Plan

  • If you are at home, go to the interior part of the lowest floor. Safe places include basements, doorways, closets, and bathrooms with no windows;
  • Avoid windows;
  • If you are in a mobile home during severe weather, go to a friend or neighborıs house who has a basement. Even mobile homes with secure tie-down systems cannot withstand the force of tornadic winds;
  • If you are caught in an open building such as a shopping mall, civic center, indoor pool, theatre, or gymnasium, stay away from the windows and get into a restroom;
  • If you are in the open, on a road, or cannot seek shelter, find a ditch and lie flat with your arms over your head. Do not go under a tree or a vehicle.

By following these safety tips and guidelines provided by the Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency, we all can stay safe in severe weather.
