| From the Manager’s Desk... by Loretta Rokey, City Manager 2002 has proven to be a productive year for the City of Milford. Target, Alcapulco Mexican, and the Everyday Cafe opened this spring, and Freeport Attractions began selling sandwiches. Cracker Barrel, Wendy’s, and Goldstar will soon be opening on River’s Edge Drive, and Quizno’s Subs has committed to moving into the Regency Center near Kroger. Our Parks and Recreation committee is working on Clertoma and Carriage Way Parks, and a Natureworks grant from ODNR will help us address some of the erosion problems at Riverside Park by the American Legion. We appreciate the public involvement from our residents and look forward to future participation. The City of Milford’s website is now up and running. Information about garbage, brush and leaf collection, tax forms, minutes from previous meetings, dates for future meetings, and much more can be found at www.milfordohio.org. We hope this service provides residents with information in a more convenient manner. New mast arm signals have recently been installed at the Five Points intersection. The new pedestrian signals installed for crossing Main Street will not indicate the “WALK” signal until the button on the nearby pedestal is pushed. This procedure is required to allow time to make the crossing. The “WALK/DON’T WALK” signals for all other side streets, where pedestrian crossing is permitted, are activated automatically. Remember, when “DON’T WALK” is flashing, do not enter the crosswalk or if in the crosswalk, continue to the other side. The City of Milford Water, Wastewater, and Service Departments have been very busy this spring. When they are working on or around a public road, they are required to post appropriate signs. Please keep our employees safe by using caution when passing these job sites. If a “Road Closed” sign is posted, please do not attempt to drive around the blockade. If caught, violators will be sited and fined. The City plans to improve parts of South Milford Road, Garfield Avenue, Locust Street, Cemetery Road, Wallace Avenue, and Mill Street by overlaying asphalt. Bids will be opened on May 16th, and the project should be completed by the end of August. The City is gearing up to address some stormwater issues in the area. A committee has been formed to assess current problems and to review several options. Milford resident and retired engineer for the City of Cincinnati, Tom Stitt, is consulting the City on this effort. Mr. Stitt helped to create Cincinnati’s stormwater utility, which was the first in Ohio. If you have any questions about stormwater, or if you would like to attend the next committee meeting, please call the City of Milford offices at 831-4192. Clermont 2001 has awarded the Excellence in Leadership Award to Diana Kuhnell. As owner of the Village Mouse for eighteen years and a lifelong resident of Milford, Diana has dedicated much time to improving her community. She has served as secretary of the Old Milford Merchants’ Association (OMMA), organized the annual Hometown Holidays celebration, and designed the “historic mill district” banners that are displayed throughout the City. |
The City of Milford would also like to recognize Larry Conover with Conover Furniture for his longtime commitment to the community. Conover Furniture has been in business since 1949. Larry has been an active member with the Milford Chamber of Commerce and has helped to organize and sponsor Frontier Days. The City of Milford greatly appreciates his dedication to the business and local community.
Finally, Milford has experienced two fires in the past few months, the first at 632 Main Street, and the latest at 741 Center Street. These unfortunate occurrences will hopefully serve as a reminder for everyone to plan for hazardous events. Keep smoke detector batteries charged, make sure that all electrical wiring is safe, and store all important documents in a fire-resistant or fireproof container. We are grateful for the efforts of the Milford Community Fire Department in keeping the damages to a minimum during these fires.
