Snow Emergencies Defined

Recently, most of the Greater Cincinnati area was under a snow emergency, but it seems that there has been some confusion as to the actual definition of a snow emergency. Pursuant to code, the county sheriff may declare a snow emergency and temporarily close county, township, state, and municipal roads within his or her jurisdiction for the preservation of the public peace.

There are three levels of snow emergency, which are defined as follows:

  • Level One roadways are hazardous with ice and blowing or drifting snow. Drive very cautiously.

  • Level Two roadways are hazardous with blowing or drifting snow. Only drive if necessary, and contact your employer to see if you should report to work.

  • Level Three all roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be out during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel. All employees should contact their employers to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roadways may subject themselves to arrest.
